Howard wrote for pulp magazines back in the 1930s. His stories have been collected quite a few times. This was my first introduction to the brooding antihero trope.

These are a lot of fun. They're about a 2.000-year-old Druid and his dog. All the gods are alive and a bunch of them are angry at Atticus. Throw in some vampires and witches and you've got yourself a wild ride.

The Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire
Dreamy and deep, these resonate with those of us who have always longed to just be normal. They're novellas, only around 160 pages, but there are a good handful of them.
